Weizen ist in Ägypten ein strategisch wichtiger Rohstoff. Jährlich werden mehrere Millionen Tonnen importiert. Die Regierung versucht nun den Selbstversorgungsgrad zu erhöhen, stößt dabei aber auf enttäuschte Landwirte.

In Egypt, bread is the staple food of the poor population. Around 40 percent of the 92 million Egyptians have to live every day with a dollar or less: And poor are many. Therefore, staple foods such as bread, sugar, rice and cooking oil are subsidized by the state for several decades. This is thanks to the President Gamal Abdel Nasser: In the fifties he subsidized all essential goods to enable the poor to climb into the middle class. Today the subsidies keep the poor alive.
